Until 20 March 2022, visitors can join Park Rangers for a rare and wonderful night experience with endangered marine turtles.
Located near Bundaberg on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, the waters around marvellous Mon Repos offer the opportunity for boaties to snorkel alongside curious turtles in a tranquil coral lagoon all year round. Between November and March, turtle tracks dot the shores of Mon Repos Beach, Lady Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island, as mother turtles haul themselves up sandy dunes to nest, and emerging hatchlings dash to the relative safety of the sea. The Mon Repos Nightly Turtle Encounter is the only ranger-guided turtle encounter available on the east coast and home to the largest turtle rookery in the South Pacific.
As for anchorages, there are a few quiet nooks and bays around Bundaberg, teeming with fish, rays and sea birds, including Kingfisher Bay on the western side of Fraser Island, Lady Musgrave Island and the 1770 Marina.
