Best Apps for Boating

Going to sea in boats may be one of the world’s oldest past times however, it has not been immune to the digital revolution. There are a number of mobile applications (or apps) now available to make the boating experience safer, easier and more enjoyable. Here are our top three apps for the digitally savvy Whitehaven owner

Deckee

One of the newest apps on the scene, Deckee comes with some big star power. Both Jessica Watson and Nic ‘The Sailor Girl’ Douglass are Brand Ambassadors of this app. The multifunction app can give you weather reports, indicate vessels in the area, display points of interest and marine facilities, and even, in certain states, issue safety warnings and alerts from maritime authorities. There is a useful blog full of tips for the boat owner and even fishing reports. Through their Flotespace product, you can even list your boat for charter or find one to rent. The app is free and available on Apple or Android products. https://www.deckee.com/

BOM Weather app

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has launched their own weather app. It is also free and available on both Apple and Android devices. It is a comprehensive app including up to date weather observations, marine forecasts and warning, wind predictions, radar, rainfall, wave height and direction, plus more. It is free of any advertising and covers all the Australian continent. http://www.bom.gov.au/app/

C-Map App

Like all the map suppliers, C-Map has created a mobile app of their maps with value-add functionality. C-Map app has a free and premium option and aside from the nautical maps, users have access to weather updates, manual and auto routing, personalised waypoints, chart personalisation, points of interest, and measurement tools. For those who select the premium version, you will have access to AIS data, longer weather forecasts, global maps and more. This app is available for Apple and Google devices only.
